Oregon fall …

Finally getting around to some blog posting. Part of the problem has been that I just moved all my pix to Adobe’s lightroom which works better with Photoshop (need the push to work more with PS) but is not as simple as iPhoto. Then, as is usually the case when I make these adjustments, there are other links broken this time it was Flickr. I like using Flickr to feed images to the blog and it was only a mater of finding a plug-in … well and learning how to get around in lightroom. The basics are in place and working, now I’ll keep you posted on the learning Lightroom part of things.

Nothing like a stretch of wet, cold, basically typical Oregon weather to get the fire places in full burn. The wood piles work great however there was a lot of  kindling chopping. The act of making small sticks out of large ones requires you to place your hand dangerously close to an axe. Regular readers of this blog know I subscribe to the philosophy that good work requires the proper tools and to this end we made a trip to a favorite tool supplier the Red Pig.

Kindling axe

I had been talking to the smithy, Bob, about building an kindling axe. A broad head hatchet with an 18 to 20 inch handle along the lines of one he is using in the store. However our timelines didn’t jibe so picked up a Snow & Nealley. This works great and while the proper tool make the task less dangerous there is an art to creating kindling. I think I’ll take some time this afternoon and build a short video ‘how to’ that’s a good Sunday afternoon project … look for the post later in the week.

While the fire crackles away we’ve been getting into the new kitchen, marble work surface, lots of counter space and double ovens have us baking again.  Well that and the Grand Central Cook book. Did a pan pizza last week with carmalized onion and fresh sliced tomatos.

The other great find was shortbread cookies. You roll the dough, chill and then slice it … excellent! JQ made triple batches and we froze a bunch so fresh baked cookies are dangerously simple.

That gets you caught up, more later for now I have a video to shoot and perhaps a cookie to munch  … js

I’m hoping some of those frozen and “dangerously simple” homemade goodies come out at Thanksgiving ;0)!

So about what time do you generally have dinner? We may be in the area – any day.

It’d be cool to hear what you think about Lightroom… how it’s different from iPhoto, why you did not choose Aperture, etc… just out of curiosity. Anyway, peace! :)
