In celebration of Mother’s Day we made beignets. This French pastry made from deep-fried choux paste is best served hot with mounds of powdered sugar. What better way to honor the mothers in our lives.

The greenhouse smells of warm soil and green, growing things. Seeds planted in early April have flourished and are now ready for transplanting. Broccoli and pak choi are the first to leave the warm confines of the greenhouse. They’ll be planted in the “meadow garden” which is prepped and ready to go.

We didn’t know it at the time, but the greatest garden tool...

We didn’t know it at the time, but the greatest garden tool arrived at our doorstep. A broadfork. This tool can manually break up packed soil 8 inches deeper than a rototiller AND do it without injuring any earthworms…seriously.

The fork consists of metal tines, approximately eight inches long, spaced a few inches apart. Two handles extend upwards to chest level. The operator steps up on the crossbar, using full bodyweight to drive the tines into the ground, then steps backward while pulling backwards on the handles, causing the tines to lever upwards through the soil. This action leaves the soil layers intact, rather than inverting or mixing them, preserving the topsoil structure.

No noise, no gas and with this kind of workout, no need to go to the gym.
